I have committed myself to the French Committee of IUCN in favor of protecting the cryosphere and the poles during the inaugural One Planet – Polar Summit held in Paris in November 2023.
The figures concerning the state of glaciers are alarming. According to scientists, glaciers are currently losing over 335 billion metric tons of ice per year, equivalent to more than 110 million Olympic swimming pools. This rapid melting threatens to trigger catastrophic phenomena such as sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and disruption of ocean currents.
Faced with this unprecedented environmental crisis, it is imperative that we unite our efforts to save glaciers and the cryosphere. In this regard, alongside several NGOs, the French Committee of IUCN has formulated a number of recommendations to urge leaders to accelerate the implementation of commitments, strengthen their commitments to the protection and conservation of the cryosphere, and engage meaningfully with indigenous peoples. The One Planet – Polar Summit concluded with a high-level segment bringing together policymakers and the adoption of the Paris Call for Glaciers and Poles. This call gathers several commitments, including the need to deepen scientific knowledge and amplify international cooperation in this area.
