Unlike the UN climate and biodiversity bodies, NGOs have a voice in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This mode of governance has made it possible to advance many causes with States.

The Red List of Threatened Species and Ecosystems is one such example. The control of international trade in wild species is still its work. The protection of mangroves, the green list of protected areas and the notions of sustainable development and “nature-based solutions” are all part of this. In just over 70 years of existence, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has given rise to many environmental causes, most of which it has been able to make States listen to.
