A week rich in exchange, reflection and commitment in the service of nature! The Motions Working Group has just completed its detailed examination of the 200 motions submitted by IUCN member organizations in preparation for the 2025 World Conservation Congress.

I would like to express my deep gratitude for the unfailing commitment of each member, whose expertise, rigour and openness enabled them to examine proposals covering issues that are both complex and essential for the future of our planet. This patient and demanding work has paved the way for texts that are innovative, unifying and in line with the collective ambition that guides our Union: to protect and restore nature.

But this is only a first step. The fate of these motions is now in your hands!

From 24 March until 18 April, the appeal session will open, followed by online discussions from 21 April to 21 June, before electronic voting begins from 27 August to 10 September. This will be a crucial time to continue refining, enriching and choosing together the texts that will become IUCN’s structuring Resolutions and Recommendations in the future.

Among the questions that will continue to drive our discussions:

– Do the motions fully meet the Union’s statutory requirements?

– Should certain similar or similar proposals be merged to create a unified voice?

These are just some of the issues that illustrate the vitality and diversity of the contributions made by IUCN members, and bear witness to the strength of our collective governance.

I leave Switzerland with the conviction that a solid path has been mapped out towards the adoption, at Congress 2025, of ambitious resolutions capable of inspiring transformative conservation for nature, commensurate with the environmental challenges we face.
