While the World Urban Forum is going on in Katowice, the United Nations Conference on the Oceans will also be held in Lisbon from June 27 to July 1.
This conference aims to provide an update on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 dedicated to the ocean and is one of the milestones of the Decade of the Ocean launched by the UN Secretary General.
The Conference will adopt a declaration (Draft Declaration) to strengthen action for the oceans based on science and innovation, which emphasizes the need to conserve and sustainably use the world’s oceans, seas, and marine resources. SDG 14 includes several targets on reducing marine pollution, protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, reducing acidification, stopping illegal fishing and overfishing, increasing investment in marine science and technology, and upholding international law that calls for the safe and sustainable use of oceans and their resources.
Mobilized for this global event, the French Committee of the IUCN calls for the realization of the recommendations we made at the One Ocean Summit held in Brest in February 2022, building on the recommendations of the IUCN World Congress in Marseille.
